Monte Cristo French Toast Casserole

A delightful twist on a classic dish featuring French bread, eggs, ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, perfect for brunch or family gatherings.

  • 6 slices of French bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup honey ham, diced
  • 1 cup turkey, diced
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  3. Cube the French bread into small one-inch cubes.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon.
  5. Place cubed French bread in the baking dish and pour the custard mixture over it.
  6. Evenly distribute the diced ham, turkey, and shredded Swiss cheese over the soaked bread.
  7. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar with melted butter and drizzle it over the casserole.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and the custard is set.
  9. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm, optionally garnished with powdered sugar or maple syrup.

Notes

Use stale bread for better absorption of the custard. This casserole can be prepared the night before and stored in the refrigerator until baking.
