Monte Cristo French Toast Casserole

A delightful dish that combines sweet and savory flavors, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup honey ham, diced
  • 1 cup turkey, diced
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar for serving (optional)
  • Maple syrup for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Layer half of the cubed French bread in the greased baking dish, then sprinkle half of the diced ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese over the bread.
  4. Pour half of the custard mixture over the layered ingredients.
  5. Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, ham, turkey, and cheese, then pour the remaining custard over the top.
  6. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar with melted butter and drizzle over the casserole.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes until golden brown and set.
  8. Let cool for a few minutes before serving; dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup on the side.

Notes

For best results, use day-old bread and customize the meats if desired.
