6 cups of sliced apples (about 6 medium apples)
1 cup granulated sugar (divided)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup butter (cold)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk or non-dairy milk
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Mix gently so you don’t mash the apples. Let them sit for about 10 minutes to absorb the sugars.
In another bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Pour in the milk and stir until just combined. The batter will be thick.
Spread the apple mixture evenly in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Drop spoonfuls of the batter over the apples, spreading as evenly as possible.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. If the top browns too quickly, you can cover it with aluminum foil.
Let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy it warm on its own or topped with vanilla ice cream!
